If you follow my blog at all then you know I am currently having a love affair with Juvia’s Place eyeshadows. I didn’t initially purchase the Afrique palette when it was initially released as the bright, colourful mattes were a little intimidating for me. I mean, I love makeup, but I am no makeup artist. But eventually my love of the formula won out over my anxiety about being inept with the shades and I’m so glad I did decide to pick this up. It’s so fun, and so beautiful!
First off, the packaging is stunning. I adore the artwork from Juvia’s and very much appreciate that the palette is sturdy cardboard rather than plastic. There are five shimmer shades and seven mattes. I would describe the mattes as buildable but very easy to work with. The colourful shades – particularly the blue (Cote d’lvoire), red (Dakar) and Green (Niger) will kick up just a bit of powder in the pan but nothing terrible.
The shimmers are very pigmented and I love them applied with a little setting spray on the brush or applied with a dry brush and then intensified with a little additional shadow tapped on with a finger. These steps aren’t necessary but they will make the reflectivity and colour POP. Stunning.
At first the colour story was a bit difficult for me to negotiate. I felt like I spent a lot of time looking at the palette without knowing where to start, but after playing with this for a few weeks I now find the colours quite inspiring and have really enjoyed experimenting with those colourful matte shades. The extremely bright yellow (Aya) is the most daunting to me. I just kept thinking – what am I going to do with that?? But actually, this is a really nice blend-out shade for the other warm mattes in the crease.
I think the greatest surprise for me is how wearable this palette can be. If you want to wear a berry look, or a very neutral everyday look, you can achieve it with this palette. In fact if you cover those more colourful shades, suddenly the Afrique becomes EXTREMELY approachable for the neutral lover. On that note the matte shade Kisi is my perfect rosey-brown transition shade but I imagine it would be a beautiful brow highlight for people with dark skin tones.
Overall, this is actually a super fun, surprisingly versatile eyeshadow palette that really balances colour and neutrals well. The formula is excellent and the price is affordable.
Have a fantastic day!
