Depotting my ColourPop Shadows

This year I have been on a makeup low buy.  I originally set all kinds of rules for myself as I was feeling very out of control of my intense curiosity to try all the new things all the time.  Not only did I want to spend less but I wanted to enjoy what I already have.  One of the processes that has helped me enjoy my current collection is playing with my single and depotted shadows more. When something new is released that catches my eye I have made a habit of returning to my singles and seeing if I can dupe it with what I already have.  It is SO fun and has stopped me buying SO. MANY. PALETTES!

So, to that end, I have decided to depot my ColourPop palettes. They are magnetic so it is very easy to do and I think I will have more fun with them now if I can mix and match to curate my own palettes rather than just using them as they are.

I started by removing every shade from every palette I own.

It was surprisingly overwhelming to have so many shades in front of me, but it also quickly highlighted that there were a LOT of similar shades.  To get my head around my collection I started to sort them by colour and finish.

The next job was to swatch similar shades and separate out any duplicate shades.  And then…. (drum role), organise into magnetic palettes!  I purchased large magnetic palettes from Revolution pro and they fit the small, depotted pans from ColourPop perfectly five to a column.

I ended up with a green, blue and purple palette, a pink toned palette, a brown neutral palette, and finally a warm orange, red and yellow palette.

With the remaining duplicates I made myself an “everyday” palette for when I have 5mins to get ready (which happens regularly), as well as a purple palette and a warm palette and I STILL had duplicates left over!

This project has taught me a number of thing:

1) Pre-made palettes will often have some very similar shades to what you already own.  Perhaps if you have a big collection you really are better just buy singles of the special shades that you love that would be unique to your collection.

2) Considering your eyeshadow collection as single shades really makes you release how much you have!

3) I don’t need the kinds of shades that I thought I did! If you had asked me before this where the gaps were in my collection I would have said pinks and mauves BUT I have heaps of those colours!

4) deporting has made me really excited to play with what I have. It’s like having a new collection!

From here I am going to buy some additional large palettes and I intend to go through my other single eyeshadows and break everything into colours rather than organising by brands.  It really has been so fun!

If this inspires you to depot your ColourPop shadows please tag me on Instagram so I can see the palettes you curate. I am @megans.muses on Instagram and would love to chat with you over there.
