Things I don’t love: Foil finish, metallic cream eyeshadows.

Welcome back to my ‘Things I don’t love’ series where we discuss products that just didn’t work for me.  Today I am lumping two very similar products from two different brands together as I feel that they look and act in the same way even though the colours I will be reviewing here are different.  We are going to be discussing the Australis ‘Metallix Cream Eyeshadows’ and the Makeup Revolution ‘Awesome Metals Eyeshadow’.

Just from looking at the packaging of these products you can see that they are very similar.  I believe that both are designed to be dupes for the Stila ‘Magnificent Metals Foil Finish Eyeshadows’ and I suppose if you are looking for a more budget-friendly and cruelty-free  alternative to that product these might be just what you are looking for.

Australis Metallix Cream Eyeshadow – Guns and rose petals; pearl jammin

The texture of these products is part of the problem for me.  They are very thick and very sticky.  Like the Stila version, Makeup Revolution does provide a primer and mixing tray with their eyeshadow to allow you to thin out the consistency of the cream before applying, but I did not find that this helped overly.  Mainly, I find these extremely difficult to apply.  Let me set the scene for you – imagine this:

  • I apply a swipe of the eyeshadow across my eyelid with my finger.
  • It goes on so thickly that it immediately cracks/creases when my eyelid moves.
  • I panic.
  • I try to thin it out with my finger to stop the foiling from cracking further.
  • All I achieve is spreading the glittery shadow to new sections of my eye while completely lifting off sections I had originally applied – it is now creasing and patchy!
  • I panic again, and go back in to try and even out the texture but this just starts a glitter fallout like I have never experienced.
  • I try to brush the fallout away from under my eye but just manage to smear it creating further mess.
  • In a last desperate bid to save the situation I go in with a brush in an attempt to brush off the fallout, thus spreading glitter everywhere.
  • The end results?  I look like the tin-man from the Wizard of Oz after a Saturday night bender!! 🙂

I literally had to remove everything, wash my face and start again.  It was a total disaster.

And perhaps those of you out there who love this kind of thing are cringing at my incompetence but I just found that both brand’s versions of this foil metallic shadow went on SUPER thickly and looked totally bazar but when I tried to thin them out (I won’t say ‘blend them out’ because that is simply not possible) the product just starts to lift off all together when you go back to correct or even it out.

Not one to give up I have tried patting them gently over other powder eyeshadows like a glitter but found them to again, disturb the shadow underneath and/or end up looking super patchy.  I have tried them with and without the primer.  And as you can see from this review, I even tried the product from two different brands just to see if it was a brand specific issue.  Its not.

Swatches: Australis – Guns and rose petals; pearl jammin.  MUR – rose gold.

I wanted to love these so badly.  I feel like every other review I have read is really positive for both the Australis and Makeup Revolution versions.  This does make me think that my issues are user error – but seriously, how hard can it be??   I have reached the conclusion that regardless of how pretty these look in the pan, they just don’t work for me.  Apparently I just don’t like ‘foiled’ shadows 😦

If you would like to try a cream shadow that is super metallic while also being SUPER user friendly, I can’t recommend the metallic Super Shock Shadows from ColourPop enough!

Have a fantastic day!

Australis: Mini Velourlips – Matte Lip Creams

I purchased these Velourlips, matte lip creams, during a 40% off sale on Australia day this year.  I have not had a lot of luck with matte, liquid lipstick and would not have paid full price for these for that reason but I was willing to give them a go while they were on sale.

The formula is drying, as you would expect, but the lasting power is really pretty impressive.  I can’t give you exact length in hours for the wear time as I haven’t been that diligent in my observations but they certainly last through eating and drinking for me!  Best of all, these don’t seem to crumble away and flake off over time as I have experienced with other matte liquid lipsticks.  As they are drying I wouldn’t wear these every day but interspersed with more nourishing products across the week they are quite fun.  I have to be honest that I am not a huge fan of the ‘super matte lip’ look – but if that is your thing, I think you will like these.

Mini Velourlips: Nudes and Pinks

Swatches: Mil-A-No, Hon-O-Loo-Loo, Ho-Chee-Min, Los-Angel-Es & Lun-Dun

For application a very thin layer is best and if it is possible to lay the colour down accurately in just one swipe that is ideal but they will let you fiddle a little without turning into a disaster.  Some of the paler colours can be a little bit streaky upon application but it is workable.

Mini Velourlips: Brights

Swatches: Tok-I-O, Shang-Hi, Mal-I-Boo, Bar-Tha-Lona & Rio-D.  (Sorry – the tubes in this picture don’t match up with their swatch – the names do refer to the swatches though!)

These little minis are small – but I really like that.  Each mini contains 3ml of product and you get 10ml in a full size.  It gives you a chance to try out lots of colours and if you like one enough to use up this travel size then you can purchase a full size and know it will be money well spent.  These travel kits retail for AU$14.95 and a single full size is AU$10.49 which works out to be about the same cost per millilitre.  As a girl with LOTS of lip products though, I can’t see myself running out of these too soon, so I’m glad to have a smaller size – at least I might be in for a chance of getting through them before they expire.

Have wonderful day!

Australis Cosmetics Haul!

I have been looking for a new foundation.  We are coming into summer and it is about to get extremely hot and humid and this is the time where my makeup starts to break down.  I had already decided that I was going to try something from Australis Cosmetics as I haven’t tried a foundation from them before and they are a great Australian, cruelty-free brand SO when they had a 48hr flash sale last week where everything on their website was 50% off I thought it was the perfect time to try some face products from their range.

I haven’t tried these products yet so this is going to be a haul rather than a first impression or review but I look forward to feeding back to you with some reviews once I have given these a really good try 🙂

'Fresh and Flawless Pressed Powder' in Natural

‘Fresh and Flawless Pressed Powder’ in Natural

The ‘Fresh and Flawless Pressed Powder’ is one of the most popular Australis products so I am excited to give it a go.  They advertise it as being a 2-in-1 foundation and pressed powder so we will see what kind of additional coverage it offers.

'Mix it Foundation' in Nude

‘Mix it Foundation’ in Nude

The ‘Mix it  Colour Correcting Foundation’ claims to be a creamy, light-weight, water based formula that will provide medium coverage.  I am hoping that the water-based formula of this foundation will hold up to the summer humidity without breaking down too quickly!

'Stay Put Longwear Foundation!' in Nude

‘Stay Put Longwear Foundation!’ in Nude

This foundation claims to be long-lasting, smudge-free and contains a SPF15 with up to 16 hours of wear.  If you live in Australia you know that SPF is really important and again, I’m keen to put that ‘long-lasting’ claim to the test through the summer heat.

'CC Foundation' in Nude

‘CC Foundation’ in Nude

I actually brought this ‘CC foundation’ out of pure curiosity.  I haven’t used a CC cream before and at 50% off – it seemed like a good time for experimentation.  I do get redness on my cheeks so I am hoping that this may help to colour-correct that.

Pretty Pastels Palette

Pretty Pastels Palette

Lastly, as an impulse buy, I picked up the ‘Pretty Pastels Palette.’  This palette looks like it will be good for travel.  It contains a face powder which is a good colour match for me as well as a blush and bronzer, and three eyeshadows.  The colour products in here all contain some shimmer but they are certainly pretty pastels.

So that is my Australis 50% off haul.  Australis do ship internationally so if you are interested you can find their online store here.  If you sign up to their newsletter you get a 25% off coupon which is a good deal.

Have a great day cruelty-free makeup lovers!
